On Thursday, 23rd of April 2020 The President of South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa announced that from the 1st of May 2020 it would be mandatory for citizens to wear a mask at all times, when out-doors. Minister of Health, Dr. Zweli Mkhize recommended regular and wider usage of face masks by the general public to curb the deadly progress of Covid-19. Before then, the South African Medical Association (Sama) had raised the alarm about the shortage of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for frontline professional health workers due to the ongoing global demand. While even bodies like the World Health Organization (WHO) have also asked world governments and the private sector to increase the production of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE’s), the sad truth is that this will not be enough for everyone.
Most concerning is that the most vulnerable members of society, the rural and the urban poor individuals, school kids and communities are at an even greater risk of infection and unknowingly spreading Covid-19, due to:
lack of access to lifesaving Covid -19 prevention awareness information,
unaffordable and unavailable Personal Protective Equipment like face masks and gloves
lack of knowledge and information about how to correctly use PPEs like face masks and gloves to contain the spread of the virus.
Lack of telecommunication technology (cellphones, tablets and laptops) including network data and airtime to catch-up with COVID-19 Information and to access online academic material as schools are in lockdown
Play2Legal Public Benefit Organization is appealing for support, funding or partnership in its quest to use technology to capacitate home based ordinary citizens, small scale fashion designers, tailors, dress-makers and traditional attire artisans to produce and distribute for free, face masksand COVID-19 awareness information to benefit rural and urban poor indivduals and communities.
